PhD in India or PhD abroad:
- My experience: I am pursuing PhD in a national institute, and in our institute we have all the state of art facilities, high-throughput technologies and high-end instruments which can be found in any good research centers across the world. With exception of universities and few institutes, most of the national institutes in India are equipped with such good infrastructure. We can perform any kind of experiments that are performed elsewhere in the world. But, if you can get through and if you can afford, its always better to go abroad for a PhD.
- There are many reasons for my statement. In India, if you want to do a good research work for your PhD, you have to get into any national institute, because only national institutes have all facilities and good funding for research. And if you get into any national institute for PhD, then it takes atleast five years to finish your PhD.
- Not everyone can get into a national institute having good facilities.
- Even after clearing the national exams like CSIR/DBT/ICMR-JRF etc, we the researchers do not get regular fellowship every month. We need to wait for atleast six months to get our fellowship. And the funding agencies like CSIR/DBT etc do not respond properly when asked. Research students are most neglected in India.
- The best thing to do is: try clearing the "Life science exams" and appear in GRE/ TOEFL/ IELTS etc exams simultaneously. If you could get a PhD position abroad then prefer that.
- Collaborate and work: In India, very less scientists work by collaboration, and very less scientists plan the work of a PhD student. Its always the scenario that a PhD student in India is suffering. Suffering with results, with his/ her fellowship, no prior experience of research, unable to manage his/ her work, unable to perfectly plan his/ her experiments etc. And due to this frustration of a PhD student rises day by day and month by month, finally leading to loss of interest in research.
- It always happens that if you go abroad for a PhD, you come up with good publications, very good work culture, handsome money, enjoyment, ultimately leading you to get a wonderful job, anywhere in India or abroad.
- Which countries for PhD: Generally, many students prefer to go US for their PhD. Most of the universities in US are very good places for all Life science research except for plant sciences. For plant sciences, European countries are most preferred these days. Apart from these, you can also try applying to Australia, Japan and China. Indians are always preferred in European countries and China for our hard work.
